Round 18
| Community group | Project focus and description | Grant |
|---|---|---|
| Amy Gillett Foundation | The climb from Lorne to Ben Werrin on the Deans Marsh-Lorne Road is
narrow with no shoulder in many areas. This section of road is heavily used
by cyclists which creates a significant safety issue as motorists are unaware
of slow moving cyclists ahead on the climb. New detection technology has
recently become available which can differentiate cyclists from motorcyclists
and cars. In a pilot project of this solar-powered technology, ‘Cyclists Ahead’ warning signs will be erected at two locations, one at the start of the climb and one approximately halfway. The design and installation has been approved by Vic Roads. The AGF runs an annual cycling event in the region – Amy’s Gran Fondo, attended by approximately 6,000 participants and 12,000 spectators annually. | $10,000 |
| Baw Baw Shire Council | Baw Baw Shire Council is proposing to expand its VMS trailer road safety
fleet to increase awareness and reduce road trauma for motorcycle riders
through direct and increased communication with motorcycle riders at problem
sites, in particular near on road motorcycle routes and popular trail bike
areas. Council's VMS Trailer program has been running for a number of years
and at present Council would like to grow it's VMS trailer fleet to increase
the effectiveness of the trailer program across the shire specifically targeting road safety for the motorcycle rider community (in particular trail bike riders). Between January – June 2015, there has already been 22 motorcyclists involved in a crash in the Baw Baw region | $25,000 |
| Bus Association Victoria (BAV) | Following incidents involving rock throwing at buses in an outer
metropolitan area of Melbourne, a range of actions are planned. One of the proposed actions is the development and delivery of an education program that will address not only rock throwing, but also other anti-social behaviours including fare evasion, vandalism, graffiti, bus surfing, and abuse of staff and other passengers. The key focus of educational messages will be around respect and safety and will reinforce good behaviours and responsible use of and interaction with buses and drivers. This will be used to complement the existing Kids on the Move road safety resource. | $25,000 |
| City of Stonnington | Purchase and installation of 3 new breathalyser units and the upgrade of 4 units in sporting clubs in the City of Stonnington. There will also be the delivery of two responsible service of alcohol training, 7 sessions of 'looking after our mates' and some additional parts and maintenance that will be covered by the City of Stonnington. Proceeds from teh machines will be used to provide non-alcoholic beverages to designated drivers at the venues. | $26,600 |
| RoadSafe Central Victoria | Upskilling VCAL Year 11 students (26 students) with a cycle and road safe
program. The students will then develop positive, practical cycle safe
activities to mentor to the year 7 students as well as local primary students
and students at a neighbouring special school. The activities will involve
ensuring roadworthiness of bikes, appropriate clothing and wearing of
helmets, improving bike handling skills, following best practice with regard
to safe riding on the road, attitude and behaviour. Acitivies will occur in
the classroom, outside of the school grounds and on adjoining roads. All activities will be supervised by at least one Bike Ed trained instructor. | $9,900 |
| Hindmarsh Shire Council | Purchase of a VMS speed trailer for Hindmarsh Shire in order to enhance the support of road safety programs, provide advice to motorists about road conditions, traffic hazards, and road safety reminders. | $24,992 |
| KidSafe Victoria | This project will involve the establishment of an interactive road safety information and advice hub in KidSafe Victoria;s Community Support Centre at the new Monash Children's Hospital. The interactive road safety hub will provide a one stop shop for parents, carers, health professionals (eg doctors, nurses and other allied health staff working at Monash Children's Hospital) and the general community to access information and advice on a wide range of road safety issues including: choosing and using child car restraints, pedestrian safety, driveway safety and the dangers of leaveing children unattended in cars. | $19,800 |
| Road Safe Eastern Metro Inc. | Purchase of a purpose built trailer in order to work with local
municipalities and community groups to engage the community in activities
that provide educational programs and promote local road safety programs with
mobile displays and resources transported and mounted on a Trailer dedicated
to Road Safety education programs in this community. We promote and educate with community displays and lectures, demonstrations, seminars. These information sessions are presented by trained members of our organization and Victoria Police members and Local Government representatives to Older road users, Young drivers, Cyclists and Pedestrians and Motor Cyclists and Child Restraint Clinic users. | $2,301 |
| Royal Melbourne University of Technology (RMIT) | RMIT University encompasses different physical structures around the city area which creates a unique and active social environment, with a very heavy pedestrian traffic flow as staff and students travel from one part of the campus to another. Also, while some trips to/from the city campus involve commutes by private cars, most trips involve commutes by public transport which needs walking from/to stations (Melbourne Central Station), tram stops and bus stops. The result is a multimodal environment with high levels of walking and biking mixing with vehicle traffic and trams. This coexistence of multiple transportation modes creates conflicts among different road users and increases the risk of traffic collisions. This project aims to identify and understand the vehicle-pedestrian and vehicle-cyclist traffic conflict hotspots around the campus and provide evidence-based recommendation to improve the safety of road users, especially the pedestrians, many of whom are RMIT University students and staff. | $24,983 |
| Royal Melbourne University of Technology (RMIT) | In this project, vehicle-bicycle interactions will be analysed and safety of cyclists will be examined in one of the corridors in Melbourne Central Business District (CBD). This project will look to the creation of a “green wave” for cyclists and using warning signs as a mechanism to reduce vehicle-bicycle incidents. Preliminary research of global best practice shows coordinating the traffic signals and providing green waves for cyclists have been successfully implemented in various locations around the world (e.g. Copenhagen, New York and San Francisco). This project seeks to offer analysis, hypothesis, feasibility, trial installation and confirmation/recommended improvements for further implementation. | $24,992 |
| Baw Baw Shire Council | Car park entry/exit upgrade for improved safety for motorcycles, school
bus and the rest stop at the Tetoora Road Community Centre. The space is used as a rest stop for motorcyclists, or people checking their car loads as well as the school bus. The Hall is used for local events such as meetings, parties, dances, exercise classes, yoga and children's games evenings. These events may have up to 50 cars more usually 5 to 10 and many take place at night. Usage of the Hall has increased in the last 6 months, there have been 3-5 events weekly and this increased use will continue. | $29,400 |
| Wallan Secondary College | Installation of a 3.8 meter high fence to prevent balls going on to the road – the Northern Highway. The fence will run along one side of the school boundary parallel to the Northern Highway. The project will ensure that the students of Wallan Secondary College can safely use our newly developed soccer pitch. This is currently out of use for ball sports until the cost of the fence can be raised. The second part of the program will be to install a pedestrian gate, to ensure student safety while entering and exiting the College grounds. This will also ensure young people on weekends, enter and exit the soccer field in a safe manner. | $23,565 |
| Wedderburn Lions Club | A replacement of the existing caravan and extension of operating times at the Driver Reviver site at Ryan's Creek on the Calder Highway. This site has been maintained by Wedderburn Lions Club for the past 25 years. | $30,000 |
